In early 1887, Joseph G. Lennon, a Methodist Circuit Rider, answered the call to help start a Methodist Church in Manteo. The church had just seven members when it was begun and has now grown to more than 800.
Mount Olivet United Methodist Church's sanctuary sits on the exact spot that was purchased for the first building at a cost of $26.50 in May 1887.
The sevan founding members were Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Evans, R.C. Evans, Mr. and Mrs. A.V. Evans and Mr. and Mrs. S.E. Mann. The first resident minister of the young church was the Rev. R.H. Mullen.
Mount Olivet is planning a 125th Celebration Event for Sunday, May 6th and would like to honor any direct descendants of Rev. Lennon, Rev. Mullen and/or the founding members issuing a personal invitation.
