The Virginia Symphony to Perform

“A Classical Music Concert” at Outer Banks Forum

The Virginia Symphony, conducted by nationally acclaimed associate conductor Benjamin Rous, will present “A Classical Music Concert” for an afternoon’s exceptional program at the 29th Outer Banks Forum for the Lively Arts, on Sunday, May 6.  The event will be held at the First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

“Be captivated by the spectacular music of this special concert program which will highlight classical music,” according to Eddie Cooke, president of the Outer Banks Forum for the Lively Arts.

Rous is in his second season as associate conductor. He delighted audiences during his first season with his musicality and conducting style on the podium that included a “dancing moment” with Aaron Neville at the opening POPS concert and “jammin’” at the Beatles Classical Mystery Tour performance with the Symphony. He serves as maestro for POPS, Classics, Peanut Butter & Jam Family concerts, free outdoor concerts and the Young People’s Concerts for schoolchildren.

The 92 year-old Virginia Symphony Orchestra is Southeastern Virginia's pre-eminent professional symphony orchestra. It is ranked in the top 10 percent of professional orchestras nationwide and performs Classics, Pops and Family concert series in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Newport News and Williamsburg, reaching more than 200,000 concert goers every year. Its performances and musicians have been highlighted in state and regional print and online media.

In 2010, the orchestra won an ASCAP award (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) for adventurous programming in recognition of its performance of new works and world premieres by contemporary composers.  The 2010-2011 season, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of JoAnn Falletta's tenure as Music Director, enjoyed 11 sold out concerts.

Highlights of Falletta's remarkable tenure with the orchestra include performances at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, opening three new performance halls in Hampton Roads where the orchestra regularly performs series, developing a discography of 12 recordings, including in 2011 a recording of the music of Adolphus Hailstork on the Naxos label, the premiere classical music label.

The Virginia Symphony’s concert performance is sponsored by Outer Banks Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep.

Sunday afternoon tickets will be available at the door: $25 per adult; $12 per student.  For more information about tickets, call 252-202-4289or visit www.outerbanksforum.org.
