OUTER BANKS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
RESOLUTION ENDORSING SHORELINE MANAGEMENT EFFORTS
IN THE TOWN OF NAGS HEAD
WHEREAS, the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit membership organization representing more than one thousand one hundred (1100) businesses on North Carolina’s Outer Banks;
WHEREAS, the Outer Banks Beaches are primarily responsible for attracting more than five million (5,000,000) visitors annually and the subsequent tourism economy generates more than one half a billion dollars in revenue and accounts for over fifteen thousand (15,000) full-time jobs and over sixty million ($60,000,000) in local and state taxes;
WHEREAS, Dare County remains one of four “donor” counties in the entire state of North Carolina;
WHEREAS, recent storm damage and continued erosion of the shoreline within the Town of Nags Head and along other portions of Dare County’s world renowned shorelines have reached a critical juncture;
WHEREAS, the Town of Nags Head proposes to pursue a sustainable shoreline management plan in order to protect its fragile shoreline, ecosystem and economy;
WHEREAS, the Town of Nags Head has requested an allocation from Dare County’s Shoreline Management Fund to fund its initial project;
WHEREAS, the Town of Nags head has proposed a sustainable project and proposes to fund ongoing maintenance through a special assessment;
WHEREAS, portions of the shoreline in other municipalities and within Dare County, including Hatteras Island have similar critical needs;
WHEREAS, The Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce recognizes the need for Dare County to fairly apportion use of its shoreline management funds for all its residents; now therefore,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce supports the concept of beach renourishment and requests that all Dare County municipalities, the county government, and the state of North Carolina work together to develop and implement a plan that meets the immediate critical shoreline management needs of Nags Head.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce requests that the Dare County Board of Commissioners develop a fair apportionment plan regarding the allocation of future monies to support sustainable shoreline management in all critical locations throughout Dare County.
