Outer Banks Hospitals and Health Care

The Outer Banks Hospital offers the best in emergency, surgery, birthing, imaging, diagnostic and therapeutic services.  A not-for-profit critical access hospital, The Outer Banks Hospital is a partnership between University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. The Outer Banks Hospital is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and has been nationally recognized for outstanding patient satisfaction.

Hospital medical specialties include: anesthesia, cardiology, cardiopulmonary, chemotherapy, endoscopy, family practice, internal medicine, laboratory with blood bank, nuclear medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics (including total joint replacement surgery), pathology, pediatrics, rehabilitation (including occupational, physical and speech therapies) radiology, surgery and urology.

The Emergency Department staff treats heart problems, strokes, automobile accidents, work and home injuries, poisonings, burns and other serious conditions. The department has twenty-one beds, including two trauma bays, an isolation room, cast room, two gynecologic exam rooms, suture room and four ambulatory outpatient beds. A helipad is located adjacent to the ambulance entrance of the Emergency Department.

The hospital has two state-of-the-art operating rooms, with a third designated cesarean section operating room. Comprising the twenty-one inpatient beds are two Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum rooms, eighteen Medical/Surgical rooms and one Level 1 nursery bed. For the past five years, the hospital has averaged more than 400 newborn deliveries per year.

The Cancer Resource Center, located on the second floor of the Medical Office Building, is dedicated to helping patients better understand their diagnosis and treatment and cope with cancer. Hands of Hope offers cancer support from diagnosis to treatment .

HealthEast Family Care, Nags Head and Dare Medical Associates, Manteo provide primary family care services.  Outer Banks Urology in Nags Head offers kidney and bladder treatments in adult and pediatric urology.  (252)449-7390.

Community Care Clinic

The Community Care Clinic of Dare is a NC Registered, Private, Not-For-Profit Corporation sponsored by The Albemarle Hospital Foundation, The Outer Banks Hospital and the Dare County Department of Health.  www.dareclinic.org  or call (252)261-3041.  Volunteers are  needed to provide professional services, handle phones and filing, marketing,  and language interpretation.

County Health Services

The Dare County Health Department is located at 109 Exeter Street, Manteo (252)475-5003.  A satellite office is located in Buxton (on Highway 12) at 995-4404. www.darenc.com

The Currituck County Health Department is located on the main US 158 Highway, just north of the Currituck County Courthouse.  Another clinic is located in Powells Point. www.co.currituck.nc.us or call 232-2271.

Dare County Dialysis Center: Located at 115 Exeter Street in Manteo (behind Chesley Mall), this facility is a partnership of Dare County and University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina.  Physicians referral required.  (252) 475-3530.

Older Adult Services

There are two long-term care facilities in the area Colony Ridge Nursing and Rahabiliation Center (144 beds) in Nags Head (252) 441-3116;  and Sentara Nursing Center (100 beds) in Barco (252) 457-0500.  Both facilities also offer outpatient rehab services.

Spring Arbor, located at 803 W. Ocean Bay Boulevard, Kill Devil Hills, offers 72 units of one-bedroom and one bedroom deluxe apartments with services including meals, activities, transportation and assistance. (252)449-4455, www.springarborliving.com

The Dare County Older Adult Services is located at the Thomas A. Baum Senior Center on the

Outer Banks Family YMCA

The Outer Banks Family YMCA offers a beautiful pool, state-of-the-art fitness center , a 15,000 sq. ft. skate park with concrete bowls and a street section and an outdoor water park with two pools (a free form pool and a deep pool with diving board), water slide, and bath house.  The center also has treadmills, elliptical machines, recumbent bikes, steppers, sauna and whirlpool, two group exercise studios, aquatics, two racquetball courts, teen game room (252) 449-8897.
