CAA Baseball Tournament Returns to Dare County in May

In May, Dare County will host the OBX Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Championship for the third consecutive year. The dates for the tournament are Tuesday, May 21 through Saturday, May 25th. The series will be played at Manteo High School's Coy Tillett, Sr. Memorial Field. Six of the ten CAA teams will compete in a double elimination format. Teams in the CAA conference include Delaware, Drexel, George Mason, Hofstra, James Madison, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, Towson, Virginia Commonwealth and William & Mary. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Baseball Championship.

The success of the past two events played a major role in extending the agreement. "We've been extremely pleased with the hospitality, facility management and tournament promotions provided by the Dare County Board of Commissioners, the Dare County Parks and Recreation Department and the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce for the past two years," CAA Senior Associate Commissioner Jerry Stone said. "We're also very appreciative of the support shown by the Dare County Board of Education and Manteo High School Athletic Director Kenny Meekins. We look forward to returning in 2002 and 2003."

All proceeds of the tournament benefit the Manteo High School Athletic Program. Last year, approximately $15,000 was raised to help meet the needs of the school's various athletic programs.

This year's tournament schedule is as follows:
