Cultural Arts
One of the many ways to support art in your community is to join your local art council.
Membership in the Dare County Arts Council or Currituck County Arts Council directly secures
exposure to the arts in Dare & Currituck County Schools and provides our Community with a
variety of performing, visual and literary arts. Art events sponsored by the arts councils help
promote community pride and offer local artists and members venues for their
creative spirits.
Annual Events sponsored by the DCAC include the Frank Stick Memorial Art Show in
January-February. On display at the Ghost Fleet Gallery in Nags Head
through February FSMAS includes wide variety of local fine art ranging from
conceptual to realistic. Sculpture, painting, drawing, fiber, pottery and
mixed media. The show was established in 1979 and is the longest running
visual art exhibition in the county.

Ocracoke Island
by Phillip Howard For updates on local art and music happenings, visit Village Craftsmen on-line at
www.villagecraftsmen.com
Ocracoke Island boasts an outstanding community of artists, musicians,
storytellers and craftspeople.
Although opportunities are available year-round to enjoy local island talent
(including gatherings of family, friends and civic organizations), warmer
weather witnesses a host of special events and artistic exhibitions.
The annual Howard Street Arts & Crafts Fair and Ocrafolk Festival of Music
and Storytelling, held in early June, showcases some of our remarkable
talent, including local resident and world-renowned storyteller, Donald
Davis, and the island's own award-winning, acoustic folk-fusion band,
"Molasses Creek." These are accompanied by other local performers who
delight audiences with songs of the sea, traditional island ballads, local
stories, classical music, and much more. Island jewelers, potters,
woodworkers and artists are joined by other regional craftspeople for
display and sale of fine quality handcrafts.
Throughout the summer, music can also be enjoyed at village eateries as well
as at Deepwater Theater, which hosts Molasses Creek and the Ocrafolk Opry
for several mid-week performances, as well as occasional guest appearances
by other performers.
All of this is in addition to the numerous island galleries and craft shops
that regularly feature the work of local and regional artists as well as
host periodic shows and workshops. Also, the Ocracoke Preservation
Society and other civic organizations occasionally sponsor events that
highlight traditional island culture, including porch talks, photography
exhibits, and our own Ocracoke Island Square Dance.
