Recycling
There are several drop-off recycling centers in Dare County. Some are located in the towns and some are within the county. The department operates two yard debris collection sites and manages disposal of automotive tires, motor oil, lead acid batteries, and used appliances. Periodically there are also special collections for pesticides and other household hazardous materials. Most centers on the Outer Banks accept:
Glass: clear, green, & brown, food and beverage containers only - remove lids, rinse
#1 & #2 Plastic Bottles, Jugs: no wide mouth jars, motor oil or anti-freeze containers, remove lids
Mixed Paper: newspaper, magazines, office paper, computer paper, bags, including pet food bags, paperboard (cereal, shoe, and canned drink boxes), brochures, slicks, envelopes, file folders
Aluminum: cans, trays, foil - must be clean
Steel Cans: no spray cans, rinse
Corrugated Cardboard: 2 or 3 wall with corrugation - must not be waxed, wet, or contaminated with food
Tires: auto, truck and tractor - must be free of dirt and oil. Remove rims
Lead Acid Batteries: from household resources only
Waste Oil: used motor oil, transmission fluid - from household resources only in spill proof containers
Scrap Metal: assorted metals
White Goods: washing machines, dryers, air conditioners, refrigerators, water heaters, dish washers
Yard Waste: limbs, branches, log sections up to 2 feet in length. Keep leaves and needles separate from other materials.
Construction and Demolition Debris, Bulky Items: sheet rock, cement, brick siding, lumber, insulation, roofing, furniture, plywood, mattresses

Items accepted are normal household waste, white goods, used oil, bulk iems, auto tires, lead acid batteries, brush, leaves, limbs, antifreeze and all recyclable materials.
The Outer Banks has door to door trash-recyclables collection from Pine Island to Ocean Hill for a small monthly fee.
Commercial Recylcing is available 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday through Satruday at the Currituck Transfer Station, 215 Airpoirt Road, Maple.Accepted materials include commercial, industrial and household solid waste. For more information, call Currituck Public Works (252)232-2504.
