Sewage Treatment
Dare County does not have a county-wide wastewater treatment system. A waste-water treatment plant on Bowsertown Road in Manteo serves the town and there are other private systems in the area. Permits for installing new septic fields must be obtained from the Environmental Health division of the Dare County Health Department (252)475-5014 (Manteo) or 995-4404 (Buxton).

Trash Collection
The Dare County Sanitation department provides residential and commercial solid waste collection for all areas of Dare County with the exception of incorporated towns of Manteo, Nags Head, and Kill Devil Hills. Solid waste is collected and transported to a commercially operated Transfer State located off Bowser Town Road in Manteo. This waste is then transported to Bertie County for final disposition. This department also provides the county residents with a large item pickup, which is held two times a year.
