I Love a Piano Salute

Western Carolina University’s Musical Theatre Program will present three performances of I Love a Piano on July 13, 14, and 15, at 8 p.m. in the Pavilion at Roanoke Island Festival Park. They are a part of RIFP’s Performance Series. In the event of rain, the performance will be moved to the Indoor Theatre. It is free and open to the public. Celebrating the classic works of Irving Berlin, “I Love a Piano” is a tribute to America in song.

I Love a Piano follows one piano’s journey throughout America and its people from the turn of the nineteenth century to today. The cast will perform many of Berlin’s songs, including I Love a Piano, Blue Skies, How Deep is the Ocean, and God Bless America. This event provides great family entertainment as the performers weave together a musical journey of America and one of its most beloved entertainers, Irving Berlin.

Western Carolina University, located in Cullowhee, North Carolina, offers 220 undergraduate majors and concentrations and more than 40 graduate programs to approximately 9,500 students. Nestled adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains, Western Carolina is focused on quality education and preparation for responsible citizenship in a changing world. The Musical Theatre Program is part of WCU’s College of Fine and Performing Arts, which includes a School of Stage and Screen, School of Music, and School of Art and Design.

Local Canine Sought to Play Toto

Do you believe your lovable pet has always been meant to be on the stage? Auditions for the cuddly role of Toto in The Lost Colony’s production of The Wizard of Oz are to be held this Wednesday, July 7, at Waterside Theatre. Director Barbara Hartwig will be holding auditions in the house left breezeway of the theatre and is hoping to see a wide variety of canine talent.

Toto must be available for the four performances of the production which run July 30th, 31st as well as August 6th and 7th. The dog must also be available for rehearsals the week prior to the show’s opening. Rehearsals take place after the performances of The Lost Colony in the late evenings. Hartwig is looking for a dog that does not exceed 20 lbs, and preferably knows basic commands such as sit and stay. Hartwig has requested that in addition to the dog, an owner or handler be present for all rehearsals and shows to take care of the dog when he/she is not onstage. The dog will need to be well mannered and easily handled as he/she will be around a large number of cast and crew while at the theatre. Auditions should not take more than an hour. For more information, call 252-473-2127.

Day at the Docks Sponsorships Requested

The 6th Annual Day at the Docks: A Celebration of Hatteras Island Watermen will take place Saturday, September 18, 2010, on the Hatteras village waterfront.

The day brings island fishing families and visitors together on the waterfront to celebrate the living traditions and heritage of Hatteras Island, a special place where the pull of the sound and the sea remains as irresistible today as in years past for commercial fishermen and charter-boat captains and mates.

An enthusiastic and spirited band of volunteers, headed by Lynne and Ernie Foster, deliver a fun-filled day packed with friendly competitions and contests, boat and gear displays, cooking demonstrations, children’s activities, and more.

But there are expenses associated with the celebration, such as tent and other infrastructure rental fees and the costs of signs, supplies, prizes, posters and entertainment.

We hope you can help make Day at the Docks a success this year by contributing a donation to help cover those types of expenses. No contribution is too small, and all contributions are deeply appreciated.

Contributions can be made by mailing a check made out to “Day at the Docks” to Day at the Docks, P.O. Box 120, Hatteras, NC 27943.
