Gift Shop Manager Position Description
This is a full-time position, funded by Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society and based out of the National Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center on Roanoke Island, in Manteo, North Carolina. We are seeking a Gift Shop Manager with a strong sense of creativity in merchandising - someone who can design engaging displays, curate appealing product selections, and create a welcoming retail environment that reflects our mission.
Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society (CWRS) is a non-profit organization established to support National Wildlife Refuges in northeastern North Carolina. We partner with the US Fish and Wildlife Service across the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuge Complex. CWRS assists in the recruitment and coordination of Refuge interns and volunteers. Our team of 3 paid staff members and many volunteers operates four gift shops and contributes to Refuge educational programs.
The Gift Shop Manager oversees the daily operations and planning of all Refuge gift shops. This role ensures exceptional visitor experiences while supporting revenue generation that benefits Refuge programs. Key responsibilities include researching and procuring all store merchandise, supervising and training volunteers for store operations, maintaining high standards in customer service, inventory control, and ensuring accurate financial reporting.
This position is hired through the Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society, supervised by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Refuge staff, but is NOT a federal government position. Work is performed in a government facility using mostly government equipment. The schedule is somewhat flexible Monday - Friday 7:30 - 4:00, with paid federal holidays and accrual of both annual and sick leave at 4 hours each per pay period. There are no health insurance or other benefits. Starting pay is $20 or greater per hour, depending on experience, paid biweekly.
This position works primarily from the National Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center in Manteo. However, managing responsibilities at 3 other Visitor Centers/Gift shops will require frequent trips to those facilities - Pea Island, Pocosin Lakes in Columbia, and Mattamuskeet in Swan Quarter. A work vehicle based in Manteo will be provided. A valid driver’s license is required. A background check will be conducted.
To be effective in this role and successfully contribute to our team, the ideal candidate must possess the following skills and meet these expectations:
· Creativity in merchandising and display
· Ability to build a working knowledge of manufacturing and distribution methods and suppliers
· Frequent review of current products; effectively source and negotiate with suppliers; ensure products get delivered on time and meet the required standards
· Be a team player; experience working with multigenerational populations helpful
· Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills
· Be available and responsive by phone on weekends, to address gift shop issues as they arise
· Assist CWRS and Refuge staff during events held at Visitor Centers
· Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Quick Books
· Ability to manage a budget
· Maintain and troubleshoot Point-of-Sale systems
· Manage and maintain inventory
· Make and record daily/weekly deposits from gift shop sales; collect, count and report donations from multiple Refuge locations
· Ensure Visitor Centers and gift shops are maintained as clean and safe environments
· Ability to carry boxes weighing up to 30 lbs.
