Outer Banks Hospitals and Health Care

The Outer Banks Hospital, located in Nags Head, North Carolina, is a full service, community hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. A joint venture between Vidant Health and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, the hospital opened in March 2002.

The 83,796 square foot facility includes eighteen (18) acute care medical-surgical beds, two (2) labor and delivery/recovery/post partum beds, one (1) level II nursery bed and two (2) operating rooms, a designated caesarian section room, outpatient and diagnostic services, and emergency department. In addition, OBH offers both an off-campus Radiation Therapy Center in Nags Head and Urgent Care Center in Kitty Hawk.

Designed especially to meet the health needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of 35,000 swells to about 250,000 in the summer season, OBH has approval as a provider of Medicare and Medicaid programs, licensure by the Division of Facility Services, and accreditation by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, College of American Pathologists, and the American College of Radiology. 

Most notably, OBH has been recognized as a Top 100 U.S. Community Hospital and named in the top 100 of the best Critical Access Hospitals in the nation. The mission of The Outer Banks Hospital is to enhance the quality of life for the residents and visitors of Dare County and the surrounding region by promoting wellness with a diverse offering of outreach efforts and by providing the highest quality healthcare services. 

Emergency Services
The Emergency Department employs physicians who are board certified in emergency medicine and a trauma-trained RN staff who are supported by unit secretaries and nursing assistants. During the summer, a Minor Care section helps accommodate the increased volume that accompanies the tourist season. Dare County Emergency Medical Services provides medical air transports out of the community utilizing the helipad adjacent to the Emergency Department, weather permitting. 

Surgical and Other Specialities  
The hospital has two operating rooms used for general surgery and a third designated for Cesaerean-sections. 

Hospitalist Physicians 
Hospitalists are physicians who care for patients in the hospital. While they are responsible for inpatient care from admission to discharge, they also remain in contact with the referring physician every step of the way.

Community Care Clinic

The Community Care Clinic of Dare is a NC Registered, Private, Not-For-Profit Corporation sponsored by The Albemarle Hospital Foundation, The Outer Banks Hospital and the Dare County Department of Health.  The Community Care Clinic of Dare provides basic healthcare, medication assistance, and wellness education for financially challenged, uninsured persons living or working in Dare County. www.dareclinic.org  or call (252)261-3041.  Volunteers are  needed to provide professional services, handle phones and filing, marketing,  and language interpretation.


County Health and Human Services

The Dare County Health Department is located at 109 Exeter Street, Manteo (252)475-5003.  A satellite office is located in Buxton (on Highway 12) at 995-4404. www.darenc.com

The Currituck County Health Department is located on the main US 158 Highway, just north of the Currituck County Courthouse.  Another clinic is located in Powells Point. www.co.currituck.nc.us or call 232-2271.

Dare County Dialysis Center: Located at 115 Exeter Street in Manteo (behind Chesley Mall), this facility is a partnership of Dare County and University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina.  Physicians referral required.  (252) 475-3530.


Older Adult Services

There are two long-term care facilities in the area Colony Ridge Nursing and Rahabiliation Center (144 beds) in Nags Head (252) 441-3116;  and Sentara Nursing Center (100 beds) in Barco (252) 457-0500.  Both facilities also offer outpatient rehab services.

Spring Arbor, located at 803 W. Ocean Bay Boulevard, Kill Devil Hills, offers 72 units of one-bedroom and one bedroom deluxe apartments with services including meals, activities, transportation and assistance. (252)449-4455, www.springarborliving.com

The Dare County Older Adult Services is located at the Thomas A. Outer Banks Family YMCA

The Outer Banks Family YMCA offers a beautiful pool, state-of-the-art fitness center , a 15,000 sq. ft. skate park with concrete bowls and a street section and an outdoor water park with two pools (a free form pool and a deep pool with diving board), water slide, and bath house.  The center also has treadmills, elliptical machines, recumbent bikes, steppers, sauna and whirlpool, two group exercise studios, aquatics, two racquetball courts, teen game room (252) 449-8897.
