Why Portugal? Why now?

Portugal is the Europe trip people come home talking about: warm, welcoming, easy on the wallet once you land, and close enough that the flight from the East Coast is an overnight hop. Six reasons it belongs on your list.

Giant Atlantic wave breaking below a lighthouse on a cliff

A coast that feels like home, with a thousand more years of history

Golden beaches, working fishing villages and the biggest waves ever surfed. Outer Bankers will feel right at home, and then some.

Cobblestone lane with whitewashed houses and bougainvillea inside a walled village

Castles, palaces and a Roman city you can walk through

Medieval Óbidos, the royal palace at Sintra, Coimbra’s 700-year-old university and the mosaics of Conímbriga. Nothing here is behind glass. You walk right through it.

Two Portuguese custard tarts and an espresso on a cafe table with blue tiles behind

Food you’ll talk about for years

Warm custard tarts from the pastry case, seafood stew in a copper cataplana, grilled fish straight off the boat, and Ginjinha cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup.

Glasses of port wine on a barrel in a candlelit wine cellar

Port, tasted where it’s made

A guided tasting in Porto’s riverside cellars, and the bold reds of the Alentejo on the Lisbon extension.

Portuguese guitar and a glass of wine in a candlelit tavern

Fado: one voice, one guitar, one night you won’t forget

Portugal’s own music, sung in a small candlelit room over dinner. One evening of it and you’ll understand the country.

Brightly painted wooden boats on a canal lined with pastel buildings

Safe, easy and perfect in October

Portugal ranks 7th on the 2026 Global Peace Index. October brings highs around 70°F, warm ocean water and the summer crowds gone home. And every detail is arranged: no planning, no driving, no guesswork.

Photos show Portugal’s regions and may not match every stop on the itinerary.

What you’ll see and do

  • Six nights in one place. Unpack once at a first-class hotel in Figueira da Foz, a Belle Époque beach town on the Atlantic.
  • Medieval Portugal: the walled town of Óbidos, historic Coimbra and its famous Joanina Library, and the Roman city of Conímbriga.
  • A boat ride through Aveiro, the “Venice of Portugal,” plus the striped fishermen’s houses of Costa Nova.
  • Meet the locals: a big wave surfer in Nazaré, home of some of the largest waves ever surfed, and a taste of Ginjinha cherry liqueur in Óbidos.
  • Palaces and royal coastline: the National Palace of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the seaside town of Cascais.
  • Optional add-ons: Porto and a Port wine cellar tasting, the Sanctuary of Fátima, a Fado dinner show in Lisbon, and a two-night Lisbon and Évora extension.

Questions people ask

Do I have to be a Chamber member?

No. This trip is open to everyone. Members, non-members, spouses, friends and family are all welcome.

Who from the Chamber is going?

A Chamber host travels with the group from Raleigh-Durham and back, alongside a professional Quest Voyager tour director who handles every detail on the ground. You will never be on your own unless you want to be.

How much does it cost?

From $4,399 per person, double occupancy, including airfare from Raleigh-Durham, 7 hotel nights, 10 meals and guided sightseeing. That early bird price holds if you reserve with a deposit by March 21, 2027; after that it’s $4,599. Traveling solo? A private room is an extra $899 (limited availability). Optional tours are priced separately: Porto $139, Fátima $139, Fado dinner show $109. The two-night Lisbon extension is $899 per person, double occupancy, plus $299 for a private room.

How do I reserve my spot?

Click Reserve Your Spot to book online with Quest Voyager. An $800 per person deposit holds your place, plus payment for any optional tours or the Lisbon extension you choose. The balance is due June 8, 2027. Reservations are first come, first served and the group is capped at about 30 travelers, so earlier is better.

Where do we fly from?

The group flies together from Raleigh-Durham (RDU). Want to leave from a different airport? Ask Quest Voyager when you book; a $150 deviation fee plus any fare difference applies. Prefer to book your own flights? A land-only option takes $700 off the price, and you arrange your own transfers to and from the group hotel.

Can I stay longer?

Yes. An optional two-night extension adds a tour of Lisbon’s Belém and Alfama districts, plus a day in the UNESCO city of Évora with lunch and a wine tasting in the Alentejo region.

Should I get travel insurance?

Quest Voyager strongly recommends it, either standard coverage or Cancel For Any Reason. You must buy it when you book or within 15 days after. Coverage is available to U.S. residents. See plan options and pricing.

What travel documents do I need?

U.S. citizens need a valid passport. Portugal’s entry rules can change before 2027, so check your passport’s expiration date now and confirm current requirements at travel.state.gov before you go.

Can my business send employees?

Absolutely. A spot on the trip makes a memorable reward for a standout employee or a top client. Reserve one or more places and we’ll help you plan it.

What if I need to cancel?

Without travel insurance, Quest Voyager keeps $200 per person for cancellations made up to 131 days before departure, $800 from 130 to 101 days out, and a growing share after that, up to the full price within 30 days of departure. Cancel For Any Reason insurance can refund up to 75% of those penalties. Full terms are at questvoyager.com/terms-conditions.

Are tips included?

No. Plan on about $10 per person per day for the tour director and $5 per day for the driver, paid locally. Tips for included meals are covered. Your final documents will have current suggestions.

Can I learn more before I commit?

Yes. The Chamber will host a travel presentation before the early bird deadline, where you can meet the Quest Voyager team, see the itinerary in detail and get your questions answered. Watch the Chamber newsletter and social media for the date, or email [email protected] and we will let you know directly.

Save your seat for October 2027

The group is capped at about 30 travelers and the early bird price ends March 21, 2027. Reserving online takes a few minutes, and the Chamber is a phone call away for questions.
